Robot vacuums nab pet hair, dust and lint from floors before they settle. They also can avoid stairs and other obstacles such as furniture that is tippy.

Most robotic vacuums require maintenance. This involves emptying the bin (and occasionally, rinsing it) and wiping the sensors and cameras. Additionally, they must be plugged into the power source. Many come with smartphone apps for scheduling, adjusting settings, and more.

Roomba 980 from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba 980, the latest in a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is an essential for Vacuum That Cleans And Mops every modern home. This model is extremely powerful suction as well as a HEPA filter that can aid anyone who is concerned about allergies. On top of that, it also has a strong battery that can clean up to two hours and it automatically returns to its dock when its bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that assists in identifying areas of your home that require attention, and then creates an easy path to get around them. This technology is extremely effective in navigating toys that have been left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out from under things. Roomba also comes with a sensor vacuum that cleans and mops can snap Roomba back to reality when it begins to move away from its original location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers underneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and therefore tend to be more resistant to tangles than the previous models. They are also taller and can be tucked under beds or couches with low sides. They're specifically designed to make this model more maneuverable on different flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class, though, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera to spot tiny bits of dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous version which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around a room and clean everything at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a great job collecting pet hair, however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots we've reviewed despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It has many of the features we would expect from a flagship model but does not have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to its dock when it runs out of battery or automatic vacuum cleaner becomes full of sand. There are also indicators on top that indicate when its bin is empty, or when it requires recharging, or when it loses Wi-Fi.
